Falmouth Town continued to impress in the early stages of the South West Peninsula League (SWPL) season with a 2-7 away win at Wadebridge. Town shared the goals out amongst the team with Tim Nixon scoring twice, but solitary goals from James Ward, Alex Wharton, Oli Walker, Luke Barner and Luke Brabyn securing another three points for Town.

For the first time this season Falmouth Town did have to pick the ball out the back of the net, Kyle Flew scored for Wadebridge in the first half from the penalty spot and Matt Lloyd added another in the second half.

Speaking to The Packet Falmouth Town manager Andrew Westgarth commented on his sides first conceded goal of the season, but praised his side for how they dealt with the setback, he said: "It was one of those things it was always going to happen, I prepped the boys before the game as to how we deal with it. Luckily it didn't really affect us too much, their first goal for 2-1 with a penalty then the other at the end was with Wardy (James Ward) and a soft back pass.

"We defended excellently all game though and I felt we dominated in all areas of the pitch. You just have to reset your goals, we have to restart again and go on another run of clean sheets and see where that takes us." he added.

One of major components to Falmouth's early season success has been the number of goals they have scored from all aspects of the pitch.

Players from all positions have chipped in to the scoring so far this season and Westgarth was delighted with the way his side have linked up moving forward. He said:"It is massive to us, if you hang your hat on one person and they have an off day or they are man marked or whatever happens then you will be quite limited on how you score goals, we are scoring goals all over the park which is a real asset to us. They're all sorts of goals as well, we look a threat every time we go forward and it is a real pleasure to watch." Said Westgarth.

Falmouth were forced to take a week away from football action as their game against Bodmin Town last Saturday (now rescheduled for Wednesday September 15) was postponed due to positive covid cases.

The break could have threatened to harm the momentum of the team but their bright start to the Wadebridge game quickly ended these fears: "I wasn't sure how it was going to pan out for us sometimes it can work for or against you but we came out the blocks so well, we were 2-0 up within eight minutes which is a fantastic testament to the lads, then we scored just before half time which was the killer goal really even though we had so many chances in the first half.

"If you go in at 2-1you give them that little bit of hope, in the second half it was one way traffic. I was pleased to score four goals (in the second half) but on another day we could have easily hit double figures without being disrespectful of Wadebridge we were just that dominant." Said Westgarth.

Despite playing a game less than the teams behind them Falmouth are top of the league by two points, taking a maximum of 18 points from their first six games of the season. On Wednesday September 8 they host Penryn Athletic in the Walter C Parson Cup before a top of the table clash away tie with second placed Camelford on Saturday September 11.

Westgarth was excited at the prospect of another game in quick succession following an enforced covid break, the Manager said:"The games can't come quick enough when you are winning games of football, Wednesday is a good opportunity to get a cup run going we have a had a bit of success in the last couple of years in the cups. You could look at it to be disappointed to tie them in the first round I guess but what a way to do it in front of a good crowd not only the F - Troop but there's not many games on around the area so hopefully we put on a performance.

"Whoever we would be playing against the boys would be up for it this week it happens to be Penryn the guys will have been looking ahead we targeted a group of fixtures that we want to do well in and this is just the start of it now, we won't get too carried away but Penryn is a game that we are all looking forward to." he added.
