DOG owners have been warned not to put themselves in danger while trying to rescue their pets during adverse weather and tidal conditions.

The warning comes after members of the public tried to help a man who had lost his two dogs at Trefusis Point in Flushing yesterday.

Falmouth lifeboat was launched to help and Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team were also called out because of the flooding spring tide and the prevailing conditions.

The man had previously been rescued by a passing vessel but the two dogs that were with him were still missing. They were eventually spotted by a local fisherman on Penarrow Point.

"There was a concern that with the flooding spring tide and prevailing weather conditions, that several members of the public, who were trying to find the animals, would put themselves in danger trying to recover them," the team said in a Facebook post.

"On scene, a local fisherman had spotted the dogs some distance away towards Penarrow Point, he made his way there and along with the owner, was able get the dogs back to safety.

"Don’t put yourself in danger trying to rescue your dog, don’t hesitate in dialling 999 and asking for coastguard, we are specially trained and equipped to be able to carry out domestic animal rescues on the coast."

The previous day (September 7) the team was called out following concerns for welfare of some kite surfers at Castle Beach, Falmouth.

On scene, team members spoke with the surfers who were well equipped, but were tiring from the strong easterly conditions.

"A good call from members of the public, doing exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for coastguard."
