Rescue helicopter above coast path in Cornwall as walker injured Porthallow

A search and rescue helicopter from Wales had to be called in yesterday to help a casualty on the Lizard Peninsula coast path.

Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team was paged not long after 3pm to the coastal path between Porthallow and Nare Point, where a walker had fallen badly near the cove.

Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team was also called for back up.

A Porthoustock team spokesperson said: "Arriving on scene team members were sent to search the path for the casualty, whilst oncoming teams and members located to a closer access point.

"The casualty had sustained possible back and leg injuries. Team members gave first aid and initial care for casualty and monitored until further assets were available.

"The difficult and lengthy terrain, with the pain the casualty was in, it was decided to ask for a helicopter evacuation instead of a stretcher evacuation."

However, with the coastguard helicopter from Newquay already in use, the rescue helicopter from Wales was called out.

The casualty was winched into the helicopter and taken to Derriford Hospital to be assessed and receive further care.

"Many thanks to Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team, R187 and S11B for their assistance on this shout," added the Porthoustock spokesperson.
