After many months closed due to the pandemic two youth cafes in Cornwall are to finally reopen – and with a brand new theme night.

A reopening party will take place on the evening of Friday, October 15 from 7pm 9pm in both the Furry Youth Café in Meneage Street and its new sister cafe, Hideaway 77 in Redruth.

All young people between the ages of 11 and 18 years are welcome to attend, for free. There will be games, snacks, music and 'hot chocolate mountains'.

It is also an opportunity to look around the youth cafes and meet new people. Both cafes are located above Warrens Bakery in their respective towns, with the bakery a supportive partner of Youth Cafes Cornwall CIC that runs the sessions.

The youth cafes will be open for two evenings a week before Christmas, stepping up to three evenings per week in the new year.

This time the youth cafes have a difference, as in addition to the Friday night drop in sessions each week there will also be a new Supper Club, which will take place in Redruth every Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm and every Thursday in Helston between 5pm and 7pm.

Charlotte Caldwell, a founding director, said: "We are very excited to be introducing the weekly Supper Clubs, which will help young people be inspired about cooking food together, making meals for each other and learning from guest chefs who will visit the Supper Clubs.

"We will be encouraging young people to learn how to make nutritious meals on a budget, meal planning, making everyday basics into wonderful snacks and also at the end of each programme of sessions we will take the young people out for a meal in a local restaurant. We are very grateful to the Tweed Family Charitable Foundation who have funded this aspect of our work.”

Kate Sidwell, from Young People Cornwall, whose team are providing the professional youth workers at the youth cafes, said: “Our qualified, experienced youth workers will be delivering exciting activities to young people in Helston and Redruth through youth club drop-ins in at Hideaway 77 and the Furry Youth café.

"We look forward to working with young people and the communities in Redruth and Helston. Our youth workers are out and about at the moment promoting the sessions and finding out what young people would like to see – come and say hello.”

Youth Cafes Cornwall CIC has thanked Helston Town Council and Redruth Town Council for all their ongoing support of the youth cafes and all other supporters and funders who make the sessions possible.
