YOUR recent article concerning the acceptance of cash was spot on.
Apart from the fact that many people, especially the elderly, either don’t have a bank card, or don’t trust them for security reasons, there is another problem.
Many businesses, mostly small ones, will only accept cash because they have to pay a fee when someone uses a bank card. Conversely, many larger businesses will not accept cash, but insist on bank cards.
- 'Bring back cash!' Concerns over businesses insisting on card-only payments
When I was at school (many years ago), it was always drummed into me that cash (i.e. coins) was the only legal form of tender. Even bank notes are only promissory notes as they each have printed on them “I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of..........”.
So, are places that refuse to accept cash acting illegally? It would be interesting to have the views of the Trading Standards Department.
