Mullion School has announced a full refurbishment of its Food Technology and Catering rooms, which managed to impress a special guest.

On Monday 4 October TV Chef and restaurateur, John Hooker, visited Mullion School and met Year 11 Catering students to mark the opening of their new food technology and catering rooms. John, who owns the acclaimed Cornish Arms in Tavistock, was very impressed with the new facilities.

He spoke to the students about the opportunities available in the industry, his own journey and also about the importance of learning the key life skill of being a good cook.

John said: "There is a place for everyone in the industry, it doesn't matter if you are working in a burger van or a three Michelin Star restaurant, the key is to source good ingredients and focus on cooking them well.

"By working hard and focussing on doing things well you can deliver the customer a wonderful food experience."

The school said: "A massive thank you to John for taking the time to drive down and visit the school.

"It is much appreciated.

"The students got the chance to show off their bread baking skills and to get some tips from one of the best in the business."

Headteacher, Mr Randle, added: "As you will be aware, catering and hospitality is a key industry in our part of the world and, at Mullion, we are proud to have invested in what we see as a vital pathway for our young people.

"To have someone of the calibre of John visiting will surely inspire them and show them what is possible if they work hard and follow their passion.

"John is a very busy man, and for him to take the time to come down to our small school and spend some time with our young people is very much appreciated and says a great deal about him as a person."
