Lucky guests were treated to a taste of Truro at a popular Cornish hotel’s inaugural tasting event.

On Friday October 1 The Alverton Hotel, which is based in the heart of Truro, welcomed over 30 guests for an intimate tasting evening that was in celebration of Truro Food Festival.

Executive Chef Nick Hodges and head chef Erkki Mikk designed a five course tasting menu to reflect the ‘Great Little City’s’ plough to plate offering.

Guests had the opportunity to savour the flavours of local land and sea with seared scallops and pickled samphire. Then taste native mussels and oysters with saffron, followed by seared fillet of Nanteague Farm beef. They then finished on a sweet note with end of season blackberries, apples from a local orchard and cider brandy Anglaise, and a plate of carefully selected Cornish cheeses from Helford, Looe and Bude.

Those lucky enough to purchase a ticket to this exclusive event also had the opportunity to revel in the theatre of the evening, with a filleting demonstration from fish expert Annie Sibert, owner of My Fish Kitchen. This was followed by a fromagerie talk from James Greet of The Greet Cheese Delivery Co.

Guests who were looking to add an extra spark to their evening also savoured a carefully selected wine flight paired to perfection with each course, crafted by the hotel’s sommelier Yohann Thuillier.

Executive Chef Nick was delighted with the success of the evening: “It was fantastic to see our library room alive with the sound of guests enjoying delicious seasonal and local ingredients. The evening was also a great way of highlighting Truro’s brilliant plough to plate offering and we’re so pleased to hear everyone enjoyed themselves”.

After the event, many attendees also shared their praises of the evening. Creator of the popular Cornish site ‘Potluck Cornwall’, Taor McDougall said: “Delectable is the best word I can use to describe how wonderful our evening on Friday was at The Alverton. We thoroughly enjoyed the 'Taste of Truro' experience and we will definitely be keeping an eye out for what is next at The Alverton Hotel”.
