Cornwall has recorded the third highest number of weekly Covid cases in the whole country in the most recent figures.

The government has published its daily round-up of cases, with the data also looking at the number of positive test results recorded over a seven-day period.

In today's numbers, Cornwall is shown to have recorded 2,751 cases during the seven days leading up to last Wednesday (October 6) - the most recent data available, due to figures for the most recent five days being incomplete.

It puts the Duchy third only to Leeds, which tops the list with 3,402 weekly cases, and Birmingham with 2,943 weekly cases.

The information was published during the same afternoon as Cornwall Council put out a warning to the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area.

Writing on its Twitter page, Cornwall Council said: "Cases of Covid-19 are high in the Camborne, Pool and Redruth areas.

"Please take precautions to help stop the spread and keep yourself and others safe. Test regularly, get vaccinated, wear a face covering, meeting outdoors is safest, wash your hands often."

The latest government dashboard map shows Camborne town as a whole to have recorded 206 new cases during that same time period, although this was in fact 27 fewer than during the preceding week.

Figures for its three cluster areas during that time are: Camborne West 60 cases (up six), Camborne South 69 (down 16), Camborne East 77 (down 17).

Neighbouring Pool & Illogan Highway recorded 81 new positive test results, although this was down ten week-on-week, while Redruth as a whole town recorded 114 new cases - five more than the previous week (Redruth South 57 case, up five; Redruth North 57 cases, no change).

However, it is actually Loswithiel & Penwithick that is the single cluster with the highest number of weekly cases recorded in that time. It saw 96 cases in the seven days to last Wednesday, which was a rise of 44 on the previous week.

While cases continue to rise in Cornwall, though, it is still not seeing the hight rate of new cases experienced back in the summer.

The current weekly case rate is averaging 478 new cases per 100,000 people, based on the government using the mid-2020 estimates for the permanent population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

This puts Cornwall at only 75th in the list of the UK's local authorities, with the Isles of Scilly actually showing a higher average, coming in 49th with 529.9 cases per 100,000 people - although this is based on a much lower number of weekly positive test results (754), against its also lower population.
