A church near Helston is to celebrate the completion of £220,000 worth of restoration work with a special service for the community.

It was back in 2017 that 11th century Wendron Church began the enormous task of raising £50,000 in order to unlock a large grant for the remainder from The Heritage Lottery Fund.

Some four years later that work is finally finished - and now the church wants to say thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.

This Sunday at 10.30am the church will be holding a special Thanksgiving Service that everyone is invited to join in.

Church secretary Henrietta Sanford said: "The congregation would be delighted to be able to thank their generous supporters and hope as many people as possible will be able to come and celebrate this success.

"There will be a chance to share in some refreshments after the service and to look at the restoration work that so many people have worked hard to achieve."

She said said the repair work that has been carried out meant the church could continue to serve the regular congregation and the wider community.

"Many fundraising events took place; regular coffee mornings, barn dances, Christmas sales, concerts, art exhibitions of children's work from Wendron School, the Just Giving scheme, stalls at Porthleven Harbour Head and other imaginative enterprises.

"The congregation and friends of the church managed to raise the required amount with the help of charitable organisations involved and grant providers," she added.

"The PCC have been able to thank many of the donors who helped them but not everyone has received a letter of thanks because their gift came without contact details. Indeed, some very generous people preferred to remain anonymous.

"Members of the church are keen to thank them publicly and to let them know how valuable their contribution was. Without the generosity of all their financial supporters, it would have not been possible to complete the work that has allowed this listed building, an ancient place of worship, to be used by future generations.

"The church has served the community for 1,000 years and witnessed the joys and sorrows of the wider parish, supporting families during weddings, funerals and baptisms as well as sustaining the faith of its own Christian community."
