An incident that saw armed police descend on Helston at the end of last week has resulted in a man being jailed.

Adam Burgoyne appeared before Bodmin Magistrates' Court on Monday, where he admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour to cause fear of violence.

As a result of the offence, the 32-year-old, of Trelawney Road, Helston, was sent to prison for 18 weeks.

Magistrates said prison was the only option due to "serious threats of knifing members of staff serving the public, which put them in real fear."

Burgoyne had threatened to "strap knives to his hands" to carry out the attack.

Marked police vans could be seen lined up at the entrance to the King George V playing field, at the top of Oliver's Terrace off Meneage Street, on Friday afternoon.

Further vehicles could also be seen in the surrounding area.

A number of armed officers in riot gear were seen standing in the doorway of a nearby property shortly after 3.30pm, and one man could be seen being brought out in handcuffs.

The officers were described by one witness as being "lined up" in the entrance, and shouting could be heard.

Earlier in the afternoon a number of armed and non-armed police could also be seen near the town's library.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said that teams were brought in, including armed officers, as a result of "threats" being made.

The force spokesperson said at the time: "We received reports of threats being made in the Trengrouse Way area of Helston at around 1.40pm.

"Officers, including armed units, have attended the scene and carried out searches of the area.

"One man has been detained in connection with the incident."
