A planning application has been submitted to build a bridge on the site of what it arguably Cornwall's most famous roundabout.

The application, which was submitted on behalf of Cornwall Council by AECOM proposes the construction of an overbridge to allow pedestrians, cyclists and non-motorised users across the A30 at the location of the existing Chiverton Cross roundabout, between St. Agnes and Truro in Cornwall.

In order for the overbridge to be built, however, the Chiverton Cross roundabout would have to be demolished.

The bridge would be provided as part of the Cycle Safety Integration Designated Funds programme, which is being referred to as the Saints Trails, and would look to provide cyclists and pedestrians with a safer means of navigating busy and dangerous routes in order to cross the A30 carriageway.

In the supporting statement, the application states that: "The Proposed Development will increase accessibility to a high-quality network of walking and cycle infrastructure.

The development would be part of a major A30 dualling scheme between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross and would involve the roundabout being removed and the A30 itself would be lowered by about 2.5m.

A new junction would be built to the east of Chiverton Cross if the application is approved and the overbridge built.
