A Penzance-based building supplies merchant has selected a Cornish search and rescue team as a finalist in its latest giveaway.

RGB Building Supplies has selected St Day-based West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team as a finalist in its Surprise Supplies giveaway and it’s now down to a public vote to see if it is one of two charities chosen to receive £1,000 worth of building materials.

West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team is an inland resource and supports the police, fire and ambulance services with search, rescue and emergency response across the area.

The charity is completely run by volunteers and all equipment, vehicles and its base are funded through voluntary donations.

This means that donations go to keeping the team running and not into investing in developmental projects.

The charity would like to build a drying room at its base, which would provide a purpose-built space where the team could properly dry wet kit, especially the water and rope rescue equipment.

This is safety-critical kit which needs to be properly looked after and cared for and the lack of proper drying facilities is of great concern for the team.

If voted as a Surprise Supplies winner, the charity will use the £1,000 towards materials needed for the project.

West Cornwall Search & Rescue is up against Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship in Totnes, Wings South West in Bideford, Little Hero in Cadeleigh, and Hector’s House and The Beacons Dancers which are both located in Torquay.

Richard Jayne, Branch Manager at RGB Penzance, where West Cornwall Search & Rescue would use the £1,000 donation, said: "West Cornwall Search & Rescue is such a vital service for our area and we fully appreciate how difficult it can be to complete projects when you are reliant on donations.

"As the local RGB branch to the charity, we want to encourage people in our community to show their support and vote."

The vote will take place between Monday 15th and Monday 29th November. Votes cast outside these dates will not be counted.

Only one vote per person via one method of voting will be counted.

Votes can be made by visiting RGB’s Facebook page and liking the photo in the Surprise Supplies album that represents the group being voted for, or by emailing RGB@pmwcom.co.uk and putting the name of the group in the subject line.

The two finalists that receive the most votes will receive £1,000 each to spend at their local RGB branch.
