The main road through Hayle was closed through Wednesday evening due to a serious incident involving a car and a pedestrian.

Police have confirmed that a female pedestrian was taken to hospital following a collision in Fore Street, which took place just before 4pm.

She is understood to have been airlifted to hospital with injuries described as "serious."

One person described seeing "helicopter, ambulances and police everywhere."

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 3.55pm to Fore Street, Hayle, following reports of a collision involving a car a pedestrian.

"The female pedestrian is believed to have sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

"The road has been closed whilst emergency services remain at the scene.

"The incident is ongoing."

Police later issued a further statement to say: "At approximately 3.53pm on Wednesday, November 17 a road traffic collision occurred on Fore Street, Hayle, Cornwall between a single vehicle and a pedestrian.

"As a result of the collision, the female pedestrain casualty was conveyed to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries.

"Local officers as well as officers from the Alliance Roads Policing Team attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours whilst a forensic examination of the collision scene was conducted.

"Officers from the Roads Policing Team who attended are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the collision or have dash camera footage to contact police, quoting the log number 526 of November 17, 2021."

Traffic monitoring system INRIX reported queueing traffic between Hayle Fire Station and Cornubia Inn as a result of the incident, which is affected traffic through Copperhouse.
