A planning application has been submitted to repair a dilapidated stable block in order to turn it into a community hub.

The request, which has been submitted by Studio West Architects on behalf of Mrs Miki Ashton, proposes work to repair the Gardener's Cottage and Stable Block at Morrab Gardens in Penzance.

Also proposed in the application is the intention to retain and improve the current facilities in addition to creating a recreational community 'Green Hub' and educational facility that could then be used as an environmental education centre.

Morrab Gardens, upon which the stable block and cottage are located, is Grade II listed and also falls within the Penzance Conservation Area.

The applicants state that the intention is to repair the 'clumsily altered' stone building using 'traditional methods' as well as repairing or reinstating the original joinery where possible.

Within the proposal, the application states: "The existing (Old Stable Block) Gardeners' House is a stone-built building that is neglected, heavily altered and in a general poor state of dis-repair.

"This building will soon be entirely unsafe and a potential public danger given its publicly-accessible location.

"The applicants wish for this building to not only offer a fantastic public and community facility and educational resource, but also to be at one with its special botanical garden environment, thus promoting this and its very rare plant inhabitants."

The application also includes comments of support from local Penzance councillors such as Cornelius Olivier who said: "This is great news and I am confident that this new community resource and learning centre will be of great benefit to the local community and visitors to the area."

Also included was Penzance Mayor, Dick Cliffe, who said: "This project is a great leap forward for Penzance.

"It is a most welcome investment in a moribund part of the gardens, and it is a successful first step in what should become the pathway to a sustainable Morrab Gardens regeneration development."
