A balaclava-wearing burglar is believed to have used a chainsaw to break into a shop and steal more than £24,000 worth of stock before leaving on an electric scooter, police have said.

Now Devon and Cornwall Police has launched an appeal for any witnesses to come forward, following the reported burglary at commercial premises on Fore Street, Lostwithiel, near St Austell, in November.

Officers were called to reports of a burglary between 2am and 3am, on Tuesday, November 30, in which a large quantity of jewellery, valued at more than £24,000, was stolen.

A force spokesperson said yesterday (Tuesday, December 21): "The suspect is believed to have been dressed in dark clothing and was wearing a balaclava, and used a chainsaw to force entry into the premises.

"The chainsaw has since been recovered.

"The suspect is believed to have left the scene on an electric scooter."

Detective Constable Emma Sandry said: “I would be keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything in the early hours of Tuesday, November 30 or has any CCTV that covers Fore Street or neighbouring streets.”
