Cornwall Council have approved an emergency closure of Castle Drive, due to a footway collapse.

The road will be closed until January 21.

The new road closure adds to a series of works going on around Falmouth at the moment including the Penryn by-pass.

Cornwall Council have placed temporary traffic management measures in place on the A39 Penryn bypass following a road traffic collision which significantly weakened the safety fencing on the bridge.

In a statement it said: "While Cornwall Council have commissioned repairs – and replacement of several sections - this is specialised work which can only be carried out by a small number of companies in the country and a date for when this can take place is not known at this time.

"The current measures are designed to limit speeds and ensure public safety."

The Castle Drive closure starts just past the Ships and Castles entrance leaving people still able to access the leisure centre.

But it looks like the closure means people will be unable to access the popular Pendennis Castle car park as the road is one way and the works have closed the one way road out.

The Castle Drive pathway is popular with walkers as it offers spectacular views across the bay.

It is not clear when the collapse happened but the recent heavy rain has seen landslips around the county including one at Polly Joke yesterday.
