A 'sub-committee' of school children in Cornwall have been raising money for a sensory garden as part of an initiative to get them involved in the community.

Children at Trekenner Primary School in Lezant have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money in order to enable them to design and build a sensory garden, complete with seating and a den, in the local area.

So far, the kids have raised an impressive £590

Headteacher Marc Wheeler explained to The Packet how the school had set up a 'Pupil Parliament' that has different sub-committees that look for opportunities in which the children can get involved in different aspects of the community.

Marc told The Packet: "Our Community Committee are looking at ways

of improving Lezant Parish.

"The parish is just outside of Launceston and is quite isolated, it doesn't have a great deal of facilities, so they've been working on ways that they could improve the area.

"Last year they came up with the ides of doing something in a field in the area, so the first step they had to take was write to the parish council and get the parish council's permission to use the land.

"The parish council said they could use the land and turn it into the sensory garden, which was what children came up with, so now they're focussing on fundraising for that.

"They've set up a GoFundMe page and that's raised nearly £600, which is absolutely fantastic."

The children are also planning on hold a 'onesie' day at school, for which kids can come to school in their onesies, and are also hoping to hold a bake sale in the coming months.

The school estimates the total cost of the project might be somewhat ambitious for the children and have said that, if the children can raise £1,000, they'll use funding the school has for such activities to pay for the rest.

Marc added: "Looking at what they're doing, I think it's certainly going to be achieved.

"It's fantastic, they're all very excited about it and working really hard to come up with some fantastic ideas.

"This is just one of the committees, and our Eco-Committee is running presentations raising awareness of various issues regarding pollution in our oceans.

"Then we have our Curriculum Committee who are all being my assistant headteachers and coming around lessons with me to see how they think they could improve things, so they Pupil Parliament as a whole is being really active."
