One of the main roads out of Redruth remains closed this evening after a sinkhole opened up earlier today.

This has been caused by a burst water main, which has only added to the issues.

The B3300 at Southgate Street has been shut in both directions as a result of the incident, which was reported just after 2pm today (Tuesday).

The road has been closed since 2.30pm.

Latest information from traffic monitoring system INRIX reads: "Southgate Street, both ways closed due to sink hole in the road and burst water main between A393 Lanner Hill and B3297 Bucketts Hill.

"The sink hole has resulted in a water main to burst."

Corserv, the name for the group of Cornwall Council-owned businesses that cover a number of areas, including infrastructure, has confirmed that Cormac shut the road as "an interim measure."

Work is expected to continue through the night, with South West Water repairing the water main, followed by repairs to the road.

A diversion will be in place while the work is carried out. Surrounding roads are likely to become busy during peak rush hour times.

Devon and Cornwall Police and South West Water have also confirmed they are aware of the incident.
