Plans are being put together for a new area of woodland which would be situated on fields above Helston.

Currently, the six-hectare site consists of three fields of improved grassland and is located next to the sewage treatment plant in Helston.

National Trust Rangers at Penrose aim to plant and maintain the site with a mixture of native broadleaf species including mixed blossom species such as hawthorn, apple and cherry trees. The wood will also include open spaces and new public access, aiming to maximise benefits for nature, people and carbon.

The Trust said it hopes to achieve all this with the help of the local community through volunteering opportunities at all stages of implementation.

The team is inviting the public to an open day at the Cattle Market Helston TR13 0SR on Saturday, April 2 between 3pm and 6 pm.

The day will be an opportunity for the staff to show off the already completed work and for questions and answers around the ongoing development.

In a letter to stakeholders, the Trust's rangers said: "We have been working closely with the Forestry Commission to complete a Woodland Creation Planning Grant to design the woods, and through this process have considered its potential impact on existing habitats, species, the landscape and historic environment, water issues, existing public access and our neighbours. These issues are reflected where necessary in the attached Design Concept Plan.

"Part of the proposal is to include a ‘Blossom Together’ area. This is a National Trust project to incorporate blossom trees and accessible open space for recreation in new woodland design. In time new access will be introduced on the site too."

The plans at Penrose are part of the National Trust’s commitment to restore and create 5,000 hectares of priority habitat in the South West.
