Helston Athletic battled hard to take a well-earned point at fourth-placed Bridgwater United as the sides produced a 0-0 stalemate at Fairfax Park.

The heavy winds made it difficult for both sides to play football, although the referee did send off Tyler Elliott for Helston and Morgan Williams for Bridgwater, with both players receiving two yellow cards each.

Despite not getting all three points, Helston Athletic Manager Steve Massey revealed he was pleased with the performance of his side in the testing conditions. He said: "I was looking for a response on Saturday, although we only got one point for it, it felt like we got a win. There was that buzz back in the changing room. They are a good side they are in the top four and will be around there.

"It was probably the worst wind conditions I have played or managed in it was really strong wind, they had some big units and we defended so well. To get the ball into their half against the wind was a success!

"Mike (Searle) made a double save but basically, that was it. I wouldn't say it was comfortable because the lads put blocks and shots and headed crosses away but they performed really well and I was really pleased to have that buzz back in the dressing room."

The solitary point means that Helston are seventh in the Toolstation Western League table and seven points separate them from fourth place, although the Blues do have three games in hand.

Despite this Massey was 'proud' of the way his side had battled after he had delivered a firm message to his squad earlier in the week. He said: "It is a great point, a huge point. I was really proud of all the lads. It felt on the way back like three points, I had a heart to heart in the dressing room before about what I was expecting.

"I said if you give me that and you show me that there is a desire to be successful at Helston you will stay here with me but if there isn't you will be moved on."

Helston Athletic are next in league action at home to Brislington on Saturday, March 19. The kick-off in that game is at 3 pm.
