A takeaway and restaurant in Helston that was previously given a zero food hygiene rating has been given a new higher ranking after making significant improvements.

In October 2021 the Packet reported how India in Wendron Street had been given the lowest possible rating, after a food safety officer found 'major improvement necessary' in all three areas of inspection when they visited two months earlier.

However, after working with an officer from Cornwall Council to make improvements across all areas, the restaurant and takeaway has now been re-inspected and has been given a rating of four out of a possible five, making it ‘good’.

The manager of India told the Packet that they had worked hard with the food safety officer to make improvements.

"We have tried our best to do all the things the officer has said and he is happy to give us a score of four.

"We're happy with the new rating, but we are still trying to improve even more in the future. We've worked hard for this," he said.

The latest inspection was carried out on February 10, and is now live on the Food Standards Agency website.

Officers carry out inspections at restaurants, cafes and takeaways looking at three main areas:

-Hygienic food handling (hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage).

-Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene).

-Management of food safety (system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future).
