If you are in a position to take on a new pet, rescuing one from a shelter is always worth considering.

There’s no shortage of animals in need of a forever home who might just make the ideal addition to your family.

With everything from a Shih Tzu to a beagle, there’s a wide range of four-legged friends at the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) in Cornwall right now.

Here are six pooches looking for that someone special to give them the love they deserve and there are even more on the NAWT website.

Misty and Brulee

Falmouth Packet:

Breed: Shih Tzu and Kokoni

Age: 8 years and 4 years

Misty and Brulee are a bonded pair of females looking for our new forever home together.

A friendly little pair who love to play together and then cuddle up on the same bed, they are looking for new owners who will give them lots of love and attention.

Brulee can be a bit barky at other dogs and Misty may join in so they will need to continue socialising in a positive way once away from the kennels.

A home visit will be required if there is a cat in residence as they can be a bit hit and miss when meeting feline friends.

They could live with other dogs and children depending on successful meets at the centre.

For more information on Misty and Brulee, visit the NAWT website.

Wallace

Falmouth Packet:

Breed: American Bulldog

Age: 18 moths

Wallace is a big, goofy boy – a lovely lad with absolutely no idea how big he is. He will need strong owners as he is very strong on the lead.

A typical youngster in many ways with lots to learn, mainly good manners, and an aptitude for singing, sounding a little like Chewbacca when in need of attention!

Ideally, he will go to a new family who has some experience of large breeds.

Wallace is fine to live with children, though not too small as he might bowl them over. He loves other dogs, so a similar size doggie friend would be marvellous but can’t live with cats.

He is really looking for a fun new family to embrace his goofy, loveable ways, but who would also put some time into training.

For more information on Wallace, visit the NAWT website.

JJ

Falmouth Packet:

Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Collie cross

Age: 12 years

JJ is the sweetest girl with a tail that never stops wagging.

She loves spending time with people and going for walks, but her favourite thing is playing with toys.

She has to take it a little easy these days as if she does too much running her legs get a bit stiff. She is also quite overweight so her diet will have to continue when she moves to her new home.

JJ could live with other dogs and older children depending on successful meets at the centre but is unfortunately not cat friendly so will need a home without the feline variety.

For more information on JJ, visit the NAWT website.

Poppy

Falmouth Packet:

Breed: Beagle

Age: 5 years

Poppy arrived at the centre very overweight, so is on a weight loss journey to help her feel better.

Her beagle traits shine through and all she wants to do is sniff everything and keep busy so is looking for an active life to help shed the pounds.

Poppy is hard of hearing so doesn't have any recall and cannot be let off in public spaces in case she gets lost.

Sweet and gentle natured she loves being around people. She can bark when left so would rather a home where she is not left for long periods.

She can live with dogs, children and cats subject to meets and greets.

For more information on Poppy, visit the NAWT website.

Murphy

Falmouth Packet:

Breed: Mastiff/American Bulldog cross

Age: 7 years

Murphy is a big lad but even though he has some goofy moments, he really is gentle giant.

He loves people and will lean his entire 52kg on you for a cuddle.

Murphy has already made an impact on the staff with his comical ways, slobbery chops and loving nature.

He is looking for a new home with a family prepared for his size, and sometimes strength too. He does walk well on the lead most of the time but can get strong when wanting to go and see other dogs!

When he gets home from walks, he loves nothing more than cuddles with his humans then stretching out for a snooze.

He will need to continue positive socialisation around dogs as he can be a bit full on and rude and will need slow introductions.

Murphy is able to live with dog-savvy children, cats and other dogs subject to meets.

For more information on Murphy, visit the NAWT website.
