Helston Athletic Manager Steve Massey believed his sides 2-0 away victory at Street was a ‘convincing win’ as Athletic extended their unbeaten run to five matches. The Blues have also only conceded once in that time.

Stu Bowker notched both goals on the day as Helston remain sixth in the closely contested Toolstation Western League table.

Speaking to the Packet, Massey said: “It was a convincing win. You usually can tell after five/ten minutes of a game that unless we make a bad mistake or don’t take the chances then it is going to be comfortable.

“Although still at 1-0 or even at 2-0 it was a tricky scoreline. They had a ten minute period at the start of the second half when we conceded a few corners and set pieces with free-kicks we gave away.

“I thought the back three put in as good a display as I have seen this season. Harrison Jewell, the two Bentley’s (Aaron and Jordan) and the addition of Kai Cornish coming back from University was excellent. He made a massive differnce to us, the boy is a real footballer, it is great to have him back for the run in.”

The Helston boss, who was a prolific striker in his professional playing days, heaped praise on the efforts of Bowker who now has three goals in two games, he said:
“When it comes to strikers it is all about goals but you have to be a team player and when it comes to Bowks there is huge praise on him over the last three games. I’ve liked what I have saw.

“The first goal he took he got himself hurt, he knew he had to get to the back post.
“It was a fantastic whipped cross from Reece Shanley who had a fantastic game, himself and Tom Hands the wing backs were excellent. He (Shanley) put a ball to the back post and Bowks hit a tremondous volley and clattered himself into the post. I liked that, not that he got injured! But the way he went to score a goal like that.”

“He led the line really well, when he is on it he can bring so much to us and to our game. He will be buzzing, from vast experience myself you know how good it is it fires you up. He gets two goals away from home for our win it makes you feel great and he will be bringing that into our game on Wednesday now.”

The rich vein of form comes just at the right time of Helston as they look to keep their faint promotion hopes alive. A run of four home matches in a row awaits the Blues, starting with a local derby against Mousehole on Wednesday, March 30.

The teams were due to play the match on Boxing Day but on Christmas Eve Mousehole had to postpone the fixture due to postive covid cases in their squad. Kick off in the hotly anticipated league match is at 7:45 pm at Kellaway Park.
