Penryn Athletic Captain Russell May labelled his side’s 4-3 win away at Godolphin Atlantic as ‘massive’ as Athletic put an end to a six-match losing streak.

Jak Davies’ late strike earned Penryn maximum points from the which game as they look for a strong end to the campaign.

The run of defeats has seen the Kernick Road outfit slip from tenth to 13th in the South West Peninsula League table on what is their first season back in the division.

Speaking to the Packet, May highlighted the importance of the victory, he said: “We had a few committee members on Saturday watching, it wasn’t just a win for us and the squad of players and Lordy (Dan Lord) who has taken charge at the minute.

“It was big for everyone involved, there were a few fans too. It was massive. It was a good performance. There have been other games where we have put a performance in but been on the losing side of it and it is so disheartening. When you are losing games and at the bottom of the table things don’t always go for you. On Saturday, a few things came off for us, the boys fully deserved the win.”

Penryn play at home in their next match for the first time since a 3-1 loss to Liskeard back in early February. Their opponents this weekend are St Austell who similarly defeated Penryn 3-1 when the sides met earlier in the campaign. May revealed that the squad are growing in confidence and will look for revenge when the sides meet on Saturday, April 6.

He said: “This Saturday we are home to St Austell, from when we played them at their place we threw the game away so we are looking for a win this week. With the squad growing in ability week in and week out, I hope we can get three points this week.

“The new additions are playing more now and we are training now so we are getting more familiar with each other. You can see that as well people are starting to understand each other’s game and on Saturday it definitely showed.”
