A GALLERY in Cornwall will be hosting a former school tutor who is described as the Duchy's 'leading seascape painter' this month.
Livingstone St. Ives, the contemporary galleries in St. Ives, is thrilled to be hosting the upcoming solo exhibition Elemental, a collection of new paintings from maverick artist Jack Davis, which opens on the April 9 at the Crypt Gallery, St. Ives, and then transfers to their flagship Fore Street gallery on April 23.
A former tutor at the Newlyn School of Art and member of the St Ives Society of Artists, Jack is known for creating vast, imposing skyscapes and landscapes which are desribed as 'capturing the grandeur of the Cornish landscape.'
Frequently painted en plein air, the gallery has described how Jack's canvases evoke the elemental forces of nature and the beauty of the region he has made his home.
Jack Davis said: "The exhibition Elemental looks at the changing skies in the area, investigating the cyclical relationship between the water and the sky.
"For the last year, my daily ritual has been to watch the sunset over the Penwith peninsula and to attempt to paint this honestly, without sentimentality or romanticisation.
"I never work from photographs: the work is done from direct observation and memory.
"I want the viewer to find ambiguity in the work, not just a figurative representation.
"Every time you look at it you can discover something new."

"These new paintings represent a new level of technical excellence as well as breath-taking emotional power.
"Jack’s paintings capture the true spirit of the huge variety of landscapes that can be found in North Cornwall; its weather and moods, the shifting light that has made this region magnetic to artists for centuries."
The upcoming solo exhibition will run at the Crypt Gallery, from April 9-22, and then at Livingstone St. Ives flagship gallery from April 23 to May 14 2022.
Livingstone St. Ives represents some of the very finest of contemporary Cornish painting, including Henrietta Dubrey, Ken Spooner, Emma Williams, Alex Yarlett, Maggie O’Brien and Emily Powell.
