A popular food festival in Cornwall will not be held this year due to rising costs.

Organisers behind Newquay Fish Festival said the event would be "recalibrating its proposition" before returning in 2023 with a refreshed event format.

Established 15 years ago, in recent years it has attracted more than 12,000 people to see sample food and drink, watch demonstrations and hear live music.

The weekend event is organised and managed by Newquay Regeneration Forum, which receives funding and sponsorship from Newquay Business Improvement District (BID), Newquay Town Council, Start & Co and the Esplanade Hotel amongst others.

However, the festival organisers said: "Despite this, with the rising costs of infrastructure and equipment, the team needs to generate amplified funds as well as extend its team.

"A year away will give sufficient time to do this, as well as space to plan and move forward most effectively with the community very much at the heart of this process."

Chair of Newquay Regeneration Forum, Andy Cole, said: “We have been running Newquay Fish Festival for 15 years and it has become a much-loved weekend in our town but we strongly feel that it is time to reconsider and evolve the proposition so it is more sustainable and has firm longevity.

"With rising costs across many areas, we are taking a step back to consider how we proceed into 2023 whilst ultimately staying true to our values of bringing people together in a beautiful setting to enjoy great local food, drink and music.

"We are proud of what the festival has become and believe it acts as a platform to promote Newquay overall whilst paying homage to our history and heritage. Naturally, we want this to continue in the right way for years to come and this is why this year is so important.”

He described collaboration as being "fundamental" to the event, and although the team will be liaising with various businesses and organisations, he said they wouldwelcome any suggestions or ideas that anyone may have.

"We are particularly keen to hear from local businesses that might like to be involved in any capacity. What we can say, at this stage, is that our plans for the future are well underway and we cannot wait to return with a fresh new event for the people of Newquay, Cornwall and far beyond," he added.

"Thank you to all of our partners, funders, sponsors, volunteers and marvellous visitors, we commit to keeping you informed throughout this process.
