Penryn Athletic Captain Russell May was in good spirits despite their 3-2 defeat to Falmouth Town on Good Friday.

Town needed just a point to win the league on the day but got all three with goals from Alex Wharton, Olly Walker and Jack Bowyer while Penryn scored thanks to strike duo Jack Rapsey and Ryan Reeve.

It was the second game of a tough week for Athletic who played the league's top two in successive matches.

Speaking after the game May said: "On Tuesday we were away to Liskeard, that was a huge improvement on our recent performances. We tried on Tuesday to prepare as best as we can for today's game. I was very proud of the boys today, yes there were periods of the game where we didn't have a lot of the ball but on the whole, I thought we did very well."

The captain rued his sides' lack of game management as they conceded their second goal just seconds after going ahead: "We replied with Rappo (Jack Rapsey) then within a minute they went ahead. That is a basic in football when you score the next five minutes is crucial. We fell short there which is poor, but we will look back on that and try to improve."

Despite defeats in both matches this week, the performances have been improved for Penryn which has pleased May: "We played the top two sides in the league this week and that was one of the best performances we have put in this season.

"We have played lesser teams and not done as well. We have got to look to build on this, next Wednesday we are away to Wadebridge. We have got three games to go so will just try and finish as strong as possible."

A crowd of 710 crammed into Kernick Road which added to the tasty affair between the two local sides, May believed his team coped well with the atmosphere:

"If any footballer can't get themselves up for that, they shouldn't be playing it. For me when you see a crowd like that you have to relish it. You've got to take it in your stride and I thought we did quite well."

The loss means Penryn remain in 13th place in the table. They face Wadebridge Town away in their next outing on Wednesday, April 20. The sides are separated by nine points but just one place in the division.
