A Helston carpenter is hoping to raise money for a cause close to his heart by cycling from Land's End to John o'Groats – a distance of around 1,000 miles – in just five days.

David Gilbert plans to cycle 200 miles a day for the challenge, which he will carry out during May.

David, who owns David Gilbert Joinery at Cury Cross Lanes, said: "I’ll be setting off from Land's End in the wee small hours. For the majority of the following five days it will be just me, pedalling my bike, with only my thoughts for company. Some say I’m mad."

However, David has a very good reason for testing himself in a way that he admits will push him "way past my comfort zone."

He will be fundraising for Birmingham Children's Hospital, saying: "I know first hand that their work really does change little people’s lives.

"As any parent will agree, we would do anything for our children and it's a bond like no other. Thankfully many of us never find ourselves in that situation, where our children become ill and our love and attention is not enough. We become bystanders and have to put our trust in the skills and knowledge of others to care for and heal the little people that we could not imagine a life without.

"We assume that they will have all of the resources and equipment available to them so that our child will have every chance of a full recovery and living a full life. This is only possible with the help of charitable donations so that they can continue to invest in innovative equipment that may make the difference in saving a young life.

"The charity is amazing and close to my heart. The challenge I've set myself does, I hope, do it justice."

He said that by pushing himself to his "physical and mental limits", he hopes to do some good towards the hospital's "amazing work" looking after seriously ill children, adding: "All children deserve to live a full life."

The hospital is also currently providing cancer care to Ukranian child refugees.

"If you can, please donate and together we can help improve the lives of these precious little people.

"Everybody who donates will also travel with me in my thoughts, motivating me to keep the pedals turning," said David.

To help raise as much as possible he has set up an online fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/david-gilbert21

David will be supported by his mum Heather, who plans to drive behind him as back up, in memory of her late husband and David's dad, Richard.

It is not the first time that David has committed himself to an extreme challenge. David and his brother Peter previously cycled from Helston to Nice, in southern France, raising nearly £10,000 in the process.
