Helston Athletic striker Stu Bowker, whose serious injury resulted in the Western League match with Buckland Athletic to be abandoned yesterday, has been safely discharged from Treliske hospital.

The incident happened in the 14th minute of the game as Bowker and the visitor's goalkeeper attempted to go for an aerial challenge.

But Bowker fell awkwardly from the clash, landing on his upper back/neck which led to him being out conscious for '45 seconds, just short of a minute' according to Helston Athletic Manager Steve Massey.

It led to the game being initially delayed before eventually abandoned as the pain-stricken forward could not be moved.

The hasty response from Buckland Captain Rob Farkins, who moved Bowker into the recovery position as soon as he realised the severity of the situation, was more than admirable and he is a credit to his football club.

On Saturday evening Bowker tweeted good news that the football community had been hoping for throughout the afternoon, he said: "Quick update out of Truro hospital CT scans came back all good inflammation to the ligaments around my spine feeling very groggy but given the all clear to go home, thank you for all your messages and especially you @RobFarks for your quick reactions top man really appreciate it."

Helston were trailing 1-0 at the time of the game being abandoned as Owen Stockton tapped home from close range after a Farkins header was cleared off the line.

Results, in situations like these, mean nothing though and our best wishes go to Stu Bowker for a quick recovery.
