Helston Athletic Manager Steve Massey labelled his side's upcoming Les Phillips Cup Semi-Final as the biggest game in the history of the side.

The Blues will travel to Somerset to play Bridgwater United in the tie which will see the winner play Cadbury Heath in Wells in the final on Saturday, May 14.

Helston haven't beaten Bridgwater in two mightily close games this season. Only one goal has been scored in the 180 minutes of football played in the fixture this campaign. That was a 1-0 win for Bridgwater back in January where Jack Taylor's eighth-minute stole the points on the day, the other fixture finished a goalless encounter.

When asked if he thinks this fixture will be another closely fought affair Steve Massey said: "Very much so, I expect there will be only a goal in it because after 90 minutes it will go straight to penalties. It might even go that close, I am expecting that really. It could be as close as it is decided on a mistake, a set piece.

"They always say where you finish at the end of the season is where you deserve to be. I think we have been a little unlucky on that, we have had a lot of draws.

"There are only the top three who have lost fewer games than ourselves but we have drawn far too many. That has been our problem, certainly since December time it has been our inability to score goals."

Helston have not had an easy run in the competition so far and have defeated fellow Cornish sides Millbrook and Mousehole before defeating Tavistock and then Exmouth in the Quarter-Final.

The last three finished in the top spots of the table this season which shows just how impressive Athletic's run has been. Remarking on the run, Massey said: "If anybody was being really honest, they would look at our run if we reach the final and think. 'Fair play! They have played four of the top five on the way to the final.'

"We have done it the hard way, we have known who we were going to play every time we head into a tie."

Athletic were in the top two just before Christmas with only one defeat on their tally at that point. However, a winter collapse which saw them go winless in six dealt a significant blow to their top-two hopes.

The Kellaway Park side have since failed to find the flying form of their early-season days to eventually finish ninth in the table.

A cup win would add some silverware to what has been a rollercoaster campaign in their first season at step five level: "It is hugely important." Massey began. "I don't want to set myself up and we lose on penalties or something but we have our aims, plans and ambitions and we are already moving ahead with those for next season and onwards.

"There is nothing like it, that's what I have said to the players, and I'll emphasise it again tomorrow.

"I don't care who the opposition is, there are 40 teams who enter the competition and there are three left. Not one of those sides or players who play in the competition would say 'no I don't want a chance to play in the final' not one of them would turn that down. We have that opportunity, we have that chance to go to go the final.

"I had the privilege of going to the semi-final and the final with Piran Films. I remember saying 'wouldn't it be great if we could bring our Helston team here?' The atmosphere is great, there is silverware at the end of it."

Massey has witnessed other sides take cup glory of late. The Helston Women's team were recently crowned winners of the Cornwall Women's Cup with a 4-0 over Saltash United, and the Helston Men's third team have also sealed the Combination League and Cup double, this has made Massey want to lift this trophy even more: "We have just seen our third team do the double in the combination league and cup. That was the first time ever they have done that.

"It was the first time that the ladies have won the Cornwall Women's Cup and I was there looking on enviously. The chairman's already said to me "no pressure Steve, everyone has won trophies now!"

"That endorsement is ringing in my ears and I know speaking to the boys this morning about it, the importance of it. This is the biggest game of Helston's history, and then I want another one in a fortnight's time."

Kick-off in the match is at 3 pm at Fairfax Park, if the game is level at full time the fixture will be decided by a penalty shootout.
