It wasn't quite the high seas but a group of hardy sailors on a charity river boat trip earlier this month came back with plenty of gold coins – which they have now donated to charity.

Despite a slightly overcast and drizzly day, the party goers that took to the River Fal were in high spirits when they boarded the party boat Princessa, skippered by John Pill.

The party, mainly made up of locals of the Queen’s Arms in Breage, enjoyed a night of river cruising, disco dancing and drinking to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care.

The event was organised by Ken, Chris and Tracey Woolcott, manager of the Queen's Arms, with the help of Mike Courtis.

The Woolcott family were keen to do something for Cornwall Hospice Care after the charity's Hayle hospice provided end of life care for Ken's wife, and Chris’s mother, Denise, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in January.

The boat left Falmouth and took a steady jaunt towards St Mawes, allowing a brief stop before steaming back to port once more, full of happy revellers.

From ticket sales and a raffle onboard £1,000 was raised, to the delight of all onboard.

A cheque for the money has now been presented to Julie Treneer, community fundraiser west for Cornwall Hospice Care, outside the pub Tracey manages.

Tracey said: “It’s a fantastic charity who do a lot of good for people going through an awful thing. We are forever grateful for what they did for Denise and for us."

In return, Julie said she was “over the moon” to receive the amount, which will help the charity continues its work in the area.
