A choir of young Germans who first met at school and have never competed internationally before has taken Cornwall’s World Choral Festival by storm amid a sensational long weekend of singing, competitions, and events involving 60 choirs across the peninsula.

Ffortissibros drove in two vans for 24 hours to reach the Festival – and crafted their own "signature" wooden bow ties – for a launch of plein air singing at St Michael’s Mount where their verve, high spirits and originality were clear to see and hear.

They were crowned overall Champions of the 10th Cornwall International Male Choral Festival -the largest event of its kind in the world - while the home-grown Cornish sensation Celtic Male Ensemble took the prize for overall UK Champions.

This was the first, eagerly awaited, "in-person" Festival since the pandemic forced the 2021 event online, with choirs traveling from Canada, Iceland, Germany and Switzerland, the UK, and Cornwall itself to perform in 40 venues stretching from St Ives to Falmouth and Newquay to Saltash.

The Festival attracted audiences of more than 30,000 across the three days with thousands more across the world tuning in for the live streaming of Gala events in Truro Cathedral.

Festival Director Gareth Churcher said: "In the face of adversity we’ve put on the most spectacular event and the feedback we’ve had from choirs and the general public has been overwhelming.

"The standard of this Festival has been immensely high and once again we’ve been able to put an international choir alongside UK and Cornish choirs in every event right across Cornwall which has given everyone easy access to the event.

"In addition, the Festival has brought together some of the UK's top vocal ensembles and we were proud to programme them at the newly refurbished Hall for Cornwall."
