Helston Flora Day footage, 1996 shows some familiar faces

Footage from Flora Day 1996 has been shared showing familiar faces dancing through the streets, and one man from Breage, who loved the day.

It has been shared by Tracey-Lynne Pascoe, who set up the Nostalgic Helston, Breage, Ashton and Porthleven page on Facebook, with people posting old pictures, new pictures and photo's of loved ones, who have passed away, and family wanted to remember them.

One of the familiar faces who can be seen in the Flora Day video is Tracey-Lynne's grandfather Albert Thomas Pascoe or affectionately known as 'Bert' who sadly passed away January 8, 2003.

Bert was a Second World War hero, as a front line soldier with the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, but was sent home due to acute stress, now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Although Bert lived in Breage with his wife Gladys, he would walk six miles every day to his work at hardware shop in Helston, Bowdens.

Bert started working there at the end of the second world war, and stayed there up until he retired later on in life. He became a very well known man, and absolutely loved Helston and Flora Day.

The video, recorded by Tracey-Lynne's uncle Geoff, shows Bert in the Bowdens talking to members of the Flora Day committee and dancers as they walk through the shop – a tradition that still happens today with dancers dancing through the shops.

Before her death in 1984, Bert's wife Gladys was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Bert decided to raise money for a MND charity, with his fundraising efforts, Bert was awarded from Westcountry Television, 'The Best of The West'.
