The St Agnes RNLI were involved in a cliffside rescue after a climber fell when the rope they had been using to abseil came loose.

HM Coastguard received a call from two climbers at about 5pm on Monday, who were unable to ascend back up the cliff face at St Agnes Head and one of the climbers had obtained a nasty cut on his leg.

The climbers had reportedly become stuck and were unable to move due to the sharp, dramatic cliff face and a large swell beneath them.

Due to the complexity of the situation both the St Agnes Coastguard Rescue Team and RNLI lifeboat were tasked to the incident which was about ten minutes away from St Agnes beach.

Due to the position of the casualties, a member of the coastguard team attempted to abseil down but was also unable to climb back up the rugged rock face.

Following this, St Agnes RNLI's in-shore lifeboat helm, Ed Schwarz, along with his crew members, Fred and Iona, made the decision to extract both casualties and the coastguard member and return them to shore by boat.

The climbers were were greeted by the station’s recovery shore crew and treated for their injuries.

Ed Schwarz reiterated the importance of carrying a phone at all times or letting people know what you are up to due to moments like these.

He said: "This is a prime example of the importance of always carrying a means of calling for help and letting somebody know where you are going, especially when doing an activity at the coast.

"Our lifeboat crew and St. Agnes CRT all pulled together and worked out the best possible way to rescue both casualties and return everyone to shore safely."
