A GALLERY in Cornwall has announced it will be hosting a new exhibition from a nationally-celebrated painter later this month.

Livingstone St. Ives has said it is thrilled to present the latest exhibition from nationally-celebrated painter Maggie O’Brien, whose solo show 'Breaking Light' opens at their flagship St. Ives gallery on Thursday, May 19 2022.

Maggie’s paintings play with ideas of scale, evoking a vast expanse of sea and sand in a contained space.

Semi abstracted, often the scene is brought into focus by a tiny figure crossing the space.

The complex interplay of colour and texture Maggie creates resolves itself in the clear Cornish light as it reflects across the landscape.

Artist Maggie O’Brien said: "These paintings are about me and my family and precious times we have shared together.

"They celebrate the wide-open beaches, the big skies and the rocky coves where I live.

"The wild beauty of Cornwall is enduring and the desire to express that in paint never leaves me.

"We all know that clouds gather on the horizon, but the sun continues to set, the moon rises and somewhere light is breaking through.

"These things are affirming."

The exhibition opens with Private View and Art Breakfast on Thursday, May 19 2022 in the gallery at 71–73 Fore Street from 10am – midday, with coffee from local business Yallah and pastries from the Yellow Canary Café, plus an opportunity to see the complete collection and to speak to the artist in person.

Livingstone St. Ives represents some of finest contemporary painter in Cornwall, including Henrietta Dubrey, Ken Spooner, Emma Williams, Alex Yarlett, Jack Davis and Emily Powell.
