A major section of the A30 in Cornwall is osed this weekend as part of the ongoing upgrades to the dual carriageway.

National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys in advance of the closure near Truro.

To enable a temporary traffic switch at the Chybucca junction – a key part of the major Chiverton to Carland Cross upgrade – the A30 is now closed in both directions between the Chiverton Cross roundabout and Boxheater junction from 9pm yesterday, Friday, May 20 until 6am this Monday, May 23.

The closure will enable Costain, the company carrying out work on behalf of National Highways, to install a temporary roundabout at the junction, to maintain the flow of traffic ahead of construction of the new Chybucca interchange.

The B3284 has been closed recently to realign the route for the new temporary roundabout at Chybucca junction and, ahead of the weekend closure, overnight closures were in place between Chiverton Cross and the Boxheater junction from Monday (May 16) until Friday, May 20, 8pm to 6am.

During the weekend closure, eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A3075 at Chiverton Cross to Goonhavern and along the B3285 to rejoin the A30, and vice versa for westbound traffic.

Neil Winter, National Highways senior project manager, said: “Work is now becoming increasingly visible, and although the temporary closures will have an impact on communities and road users, we are committed to minimising any disruption and ensuring we keep local residents and communities fully informed.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, and we’d like to thank motorists in advance for their patience while work on this vital improvement scheme takes place.”

In the autumn, a full weekend closure of the A30 will also be implemented for the installation of a new bridge, and demolition of the Tolgroggan bridge near Zelah.

The £330 million upgrade is scheduled to be open to traffic in winter 2023 and further information on the scheme can be found at https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/a30-carland-cross-to-chiverton/

The cost of developing the scheme is being partly funded by an £8 million contribution from the European Regional Development Fund, with an additional £12 million for the construction phase. The remainder of the cost of developing and delivering the scheme is being funded by central Government.
