An 86-year-old pensioner who was found with more than 500 child abuse images has been remanded in prison after a Judge said it was "a racing certainty" that he would reoffend if he was bailed.

Alan Barclay pleaded guilty to possessing 285 videos and 64 photos of the most severe category of child abuse images as part of the larger overall total when he appeared at Truro Crown Court.

The Category A images and videos show adults committing penetrative sex acts with children.

Barclay, of Fenwick Road, Falmouth, also admitted a charge of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving an animal and being in breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Judge Robert Linford refused a bail application, saying it was a "racing certainty" that Barclay would re-offend.

The court heard married Barclay wanted to return home to his wife because he was finding jail very difficult physically and he was not coping with the prison environment.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next month.
