Fears that a former mill building in Hayle may collapse has forced Cornwall Council to put up a temporary exclusion zone and close part of a supermarket car park.

Concerns over the stability of the Loggans Mill building has already prompted the introduction of the exclusion zone but now the council has also forced the partial closure of the adjoining Lidl car park for at least the next two weeks. The council says it and its surveyors will be undertaking "urgent investigative work" at the site over the coming weeks to assess next steps.

The council says people living near to the Grade II listed building are also being informed of the situation.

In a statement posted on Facebook the council says: "Concerns have been raised over the potential stability of the former Loggans Mill building in Hayle. Cornwall Council and its surveyors will be undertaking urgent investigative work at the site over the coming weeks to assess next steps.

"In order to maintain public safety, a temporary exclusion zone has recently been put in place around part of the southern building, which has forced the partial closure of the adjoining Lidl car park for at least the next two weeks.

"Affected residents living near the building are also in the process of being informed of the situation."

Cllr Olly Monk, portfolio holder for housing, said: "We are taking this urgent action to ensure the safety of those living, working and shopping in the area, to give us time to undertake some detailed surveys and assessments on the building.

"We are very sorry for any disruption this temporary exclusion zone will create, but public safety has to be our first priority."
