The Rotary Club of Falmouth has just celebrated 100 years of service to the local community and the world at large, with a dinner at the Penmorvah Manor Hotel.

Among the guests shown above were, Jean-Phillipe Colas President of Rotary La Rochelle Aunis, Professor Peter Scott, president of Falmouth Rotary Club, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall Col. Edward Bolitho OBE, The Mayor of Penryn Julie Tucker, Mayor of Falmouth Steve Eva and Rotary Assistant District Governor Tony Williams.

Rotary was founded by Paul Harris in Chicago on February 23, 1905.

It soon came over to The British Isles and in 1922 – via Plymouth – the Rotary Clubs of St Austell, Truro and Falmouth were formed.

The Falmouth Club has met continually ever since, even during World War II.

Amongst the Falmouth Club’s more recent achievements include purchase of land at Boslowick and helping fund the construction of Bosvale Community Centre, supplying Sri Lankan Fishermen with £150k of boats and equipment after the 2004 Tsunami, supporting the raising of nearly $200k for the provision of fresh water and water harvesting in two African villages.

The celebration coincided with a visit from members of their twinned Rotary Club of La Rochelle Aunis where, during a supper on board La Peniche, they were able to celebrate a Rotary International Grant of three thousand euros for the creation of a new public park in La Rochelle.
