A MAN who stole nearly £500 worth of clothes from a shop in Truro has been made the subject of a community order after appearing at magistrates court.

James Anthony Batten, 45, of Bosence Road in Townshend, Hayle, appeared in front of magistrates at Truro Magistrates' Court on Thursday, May 26 on one count of theft from a shop.

The offence was committed on Thursday, September 9 2021 in Truro where Batten entered the shop Cotswold Outdoors and stole clothing to the value of £480.

Batten pleaded guilty to the offence when appearing at Truro Magistrates' Court.

During his sentencing, Batten was made the subject of a community order in which he must have treatment for drug dependency by or under the direction of probation services as a non-resident for 12 months.

As well as drug rehabilitation treatment, Batten must also undertake mental health treatment as directed by probation services for 12 sessions over 12 months.

Batten will also need to partake in rehabilitation activities for a maximum of 30 days and pay compensation of £480.

The court also noted how a surcharge had not been imposed due to priority being given to compensation.

It also noted how Batten's guilty plea had been taken into account when imposing the sentence.
