Despite a recommendation from the town council that it be refused, an application to extend a "popular" Falmouth fish and chip shop has been given the go-ahead.

Old Hill Fish and Chip Shop, Glasney Road had applied for internal alterations and to extend the existing fish and chip shop and replace the existing balcony and fire escape with a new one.

However, Falmouth Town Council had recommended refusal of the application due to concerns about overlooking issues from the balcony but said they were "minded" to support the internal alterations.

However the application has now been given the go-ahead by Cornwall Council's planning committee.

The site consists of a barbers and the fish the chip shop on the ground floor and the owner's accommodation on the first floor.

The preparation area to the rear of the fish and chip shop was said to be small and would benefit from a scheme of improvements.

The application said: "The shop is very popular and the extra space would help the owner to expand his business.

"The current preparation area, WC and storage is very limited in terms of space and quality of finish. It is proposed to add a new flat roof extension to the rear of the property to allow for increased preparation area, updated utility and WC facilities.

"It is proposed to add a larger balcony and access stair to the managers accommodation to the flat roof area above the extension. There is currently a balcony serving the owners accommodation."
