A HELSTON man has appeared in front of magistrates in Cornwall after destroying a window belonging to a housing association.

Aidan Tyler Gregory, 22, of Roundhouse Way in Helston appeared at Truro Magistrates' Court on Tuesday May 17 on one count of criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

The offence took place in Helston on March 29 2022 whereby without lawful excuse, destroyed a window to the value of unknown belonging to Coastline Housing intending to destroy or damage such property or being reckless as to whether such property would be destroyed or damaged.

Gregory pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared in court on May 17.

During his sentencing, Gregory was discharged conditionally for 18 months and made to pay compensation of £300.

The court noted that the amount of the surcharge was not imposed because priority was given to compensation.

It also noted that Gregory's guilty plea was taken in to account when imposing the sentence.

The offence of criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 has a maximum sentence of a level 4 fine or three months custody.

According to the Sentencing Council, sentences for criminal damage are worked out by assessing both the harm done and the culpability of the defendant, as well as any aggravating factors.
