A MALE voice choir in Flushing has lost one of its founding members after he passed away at the start of June.

David Charles Laity, affectionately known as 'The Admiral,' died on Saturday, June 4, and was one of the original eleven members of the Nankersey Glee Singers which was formed in January 1950.

David used to sing with his father and grandfather at the Flushing Primitive Methodist Chapel, and joined his father in the choir at the age of 15.

The Admiral was still singing with the choir up to a few years ago, and members use to joke that he always seemed to have many copies of the same songs.

His funeral is to be held on Monday, June 20 at 2pm at St Mylor Parish Church and the wake will be held at Mylor Yacht club.

Needless to say that the choir will be in attendance, and singing at both events.

Steve Simmons, press secretary for the Nankersey Male Choir, said: "David had a strong voice and was the life and soul of the party.

"He was a very big character.

"I was in the choir with him and he was one of the founding members of the choir.

"He was with us up until about two or three years ago, we sang outside his house three weeks ago as it was probably the last time he would hear us sing.

"The choir was asked to go up there and so we stood outside his house and sang.

"There will be a lot of people coming to his funeral, a lot of previous members who left the choir wanted to come back and sing."

Before David’s funeral, Nankersey will be appearing at the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival on June 17.

The choir are singing at 7pm in Events Square, right after the opening ceremony.
