A SPECIALIST beer shop owner's attempt to create a "Euro style cafe bar" at its branch in Falmouth has been supported by town councillors.

Red Elephant Beer Seller Ltd, want to vary the licence for its Green Elephant Beer Cellar and Tasting Room shop at 2 Market Strand to include on sales (currently off-sales) Monday to Sunday 10am to 10pm

At a meeting of Falmouth Town Council's planning and licensing committee the owner of the business based in Truro apologised in a letter to councillors for not attending the meeting as he was on holiday.

He said the bottle shop in Falmouth specialises in hard to get beers from all over the world, but primarily championed small local breweries

He said that since starting the business what was very clear was that drinking on the premises would be welcome. He said over the last six to eight months they had been open on some Fridays and Saturdays to test the waters and these nights had gone well but, due to the limited numbers that could attend, it was difficult to build a crowd.

He said the aim was to create a Euro-style cafe bar where people just have one or two beers before or after a meal. He said his clientele tended to be older with a high percentage of couples who want a nice relaxed place for a quality drink. He said on the nights they had been opened they had received nothing but positive feedback.

Falmouth mayor Steve Eva said he had absolutely no problems with it and should be recommended as set out.

Cllr Jude Robinson said it was a very specific and small market.

The application was supported by councillors.

The final decision will be made by Cornwall Council licensing.
