Crowds of people enjoyed a colourful spectacle on Saturday when Murdoch Day returned to Redruth.

The town's annual feast day celebrates its most famous citizen, 18th inventor William Murdoch, who is believed to have been the first person in Britain to build a steam-powered road vehicle, as well as the first in the world to light his house and office with piped coal gas – paving the way for the gas industry of today. He also invented a working model of a low pressure steam locomotive.

Saturday saw the return of Murdoch Day for the first time in three years, with a day of parades, music and entertainment.

The day began at 10am before the grand parade left at 11am, led by Redruth Town Band and two stilt walkers.

There were workshops in St Rumon's Garden, a classic car and vintage steam vehicle display in the Red Lion Car park, Murdoch House was open playing a special Murdoch film, stalls lined Fore Street and Raymond's Old Tyme Fair was in the Flowerpot Car Park.

Redruth and District Chamber of Commerce said: "What a fantastic day it was in Redruth. The community came out to celebrate their heritage.

"The looks of parents as they watched their young people marching in the parade was refreshing and the support of this community for their town was inspiring.

"Murdoch Day was a day of pride in all that is Redruth. It was a great day."

The group thanked everything who attended, including mayors, parish chairs, Cornwall councillors, town councillors, Redruth's mayor and deputy mayor, MP George Eustice, volunteers, performers, William Murdoch (David) Cobweb Tours, and the schools for participating.

Winners of the Queen's Jubilee themed Murdoch Day window dressing competition were Hamilton's Barbers, with K9 Crusaders in second place, Cornwall Animal Hospital in third and the Civic Centre getting a special mention.
