A packed meeting of Labour party members has selected the party's next candidate to fight for the Falmouth and Truro seat at the next general election.

Falmouth councillor and Labour group leader Jayne Kirkham was officially chosen to be the prospective parliamentary candidate and Labour MP in opposition to current sitting conservative MP Cherilyn Mackrory.

Jayne was greeted with enthusiastic applause and cheers as the result was announced and dozens of members stayed behind after the meeting to show their support in a group photo

Jayne said: “Truro and Falmouth is one of the key seats Labour must win to form a government and I have the profile, the work ethic, the campaigning skills and the sheer determination to beat the Tories here.

"Cornwall is losing out with six Tory MPs and I want to go to Westminster to be the strong voice that we need.

“I will work hard to win the trust of local voters, to show that not all politicians are the same.”

Jayne added: “As the Labour group leader on Cornwall Council, I will continue to deliver for local residents, stand up for Cornwall locally and nationally and I will be working with my team to reach every constituent of Truro and Falmouth in every town and village.

The next general election cannot come soon enough, so that we can elect a Labour MP here, working in a Labour government to deliver the change we need.”

Truro and Falmouth is one of the first seats to select a candidate as it is one of Labour’s key targets. Every member in the constituency with six months membership could vote for their candidate either at the meeting or by post.

The selection meeting was held in the evening at Truro College on Wednesday, June 22, following the opening of applications for the seat on 20th May 2022.

The current sitting MP Cherilyn Mackrory has already announced her bid for re-election back in February.

She unanimously re-adopted as Conservative candidate for Truro and Falmouth at the next general election.
