Police have confirmed a woman has died following a crash between a van and a pedestrian this morning.

Officers were called to reports of a collision involving a Volkswagen van and a pedestrian, on the A39 between Treliever roundabout and Kernick Road Industrial Estate Penryn, at around 9.35am today (Friday, June 24).

It was reported locally that the collision involved the crossing between Kingston Way and the Tremough Campus.

A campaign has now started to improve the safety of the crossing: Petition launched to improve safety at crossing where woman lost her life

The air ambulance was seen landing in a field behind the Tremough Campus.

Police say the pedestrian, a 33-year-old woman from the local area, sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital by Cornwall Air Ambulance, where she later died.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by police.

The driver of the van stopped at the scene and is helping officers with their enquiries, added a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police.

The A39 between Kernick Road Industrial Estate and Treliever roundabout was closed while forensic collision officers investigated the collision, but it was reopened at around 4.20pm.

A police spokesesperson said: "Officers from the Specialist Roads Policing Team would like to thank those members of the public who assisted at the scene."

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
