A local car enthusiast from Cornwall has celebrated his 14th and final Classic Car Rally by raising a total sum of £1,033,088 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Dennis Greenslade founded the event with his late wife, Tricia who passed away in 2005 from cancer of the esophagus.

Dennis combined his love and motor cars with fundraising back in 2004, he is the creator of one of the toughest classic car tours in Europe.

This year, Dennis created his longest and most ambitious route yet, which included covering England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales in 16 days with the eldest car dating back to 1939.

Speaking of his achievement and subsequent retirement from the event, Dennis said: “I wanted our last event to be our most ambitious route to date. I aimed to reach the magic £1m and I express my sincere thanks to all who have contributed over the last sixteen years. The workload has been immense, and I am now looking forward to relaxing and competing in historic rallies around Europe

“Both me and Tricia felt it important to raise money for charity with the challenge. However, like so many, over the years the fundraising has become even more personal.”

“Cape to Cape is more than a rally for those who take part. It has become an opportunity to reunite with friends and share our love of all things motor racing. With nearly forty classic cars arriving in a town at one time - we can create quite a spectacle.”

Hugh Marriage – who was part of the winning team - added his reflections and thanks to Dennis for his organisation and years of service, saying: "The Morris Minor was much more at home on the Gated Roads of Wales than on the Motorways. Dennis even organised great weather as the windscreen Wipers on the Morris are not its strong point. Great organisation for a wonderful charity, a privilege to be part of."

Emma Wright, Senior Fundraising Manager, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, shared her thanks to Dennis and the participants for their support.

She said: “I am incredibly proud of everyone who has worked so hard in truly unprecedented times to fundraise for Macmillan.

“And of course, the event would simply not have happened without Dennis. Dennis is quite literally the driving force behind Cape to Cape, spending months and months organising not just the route but things such as hotels, and places to visit on route.

"It is truly a mammoth undertaking, but the £1 million raised by his event has made and will continue to make such a difference to so many people affected by cancer.”
