A RUGBY club in Cornwall will be looking to set itself up for another century and a half when it celebrates 150 years of continuous rugby this weekend.

Falmouth Rugby has said it wants to create legacy this weekend with the hope of launching a new women's team featuring alongside its anniversary celebrations and a fundraising cycle as part of its 150th anniversary.

The event will be taking place on Saturday, July 2 with celebrations kicking off from 2pm.

Falmouth Rugby Chairman, John Bullock, said: "It'd be really, really brilliant if we can create a women's team at Falmouth during our 150th year, to make the club completely inclusive.

"What we're trying to create is a team called the 'White Tails' which will be Falmouth's women's team."

The club say they're looking for people to come and join that element of the club to get its new venture of the ground.

John explained: "What we're particularly looking for are a coach, a physio, a manager, so that the girls have got parity with the guys at Falmouth Rugby Club."

To get the ball rolling on its new venture, the club are also holding 'Introduction to Rugby' sessions throughout June and July on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7pm and 8pm.

As well as celebrating a century and a half of sport, the club will also be raising money for three chosen charities with a 150-mile fundraising bike ride around the South West during which it will be visiting a number of other clubs also celebrating 150 years since their inception.

The ride will raise money for MIND, Children's Hospice South West and Jay's AIM - a charity launched by the family of a rugby player named Jay who died of a heart attack while on the pitch and who provide clubs with defibrillators.

Joh continued: "There's a little gang of us doing 150 for 150, so we're cycling 150 miles and what we're doing is visiting some of the other clubs in the South West that are also going to be 150 years old."

The rugby club cyclist will start at Exmouth Rugby Football Club, travel to Paignton Rugby Club then onto Newton Abbot Rugby Football Club Limited before crossing Dartmoor to end day one.

Day two will stop at Okehampton Rugby Club, Bude Rugby Club and Camelford RFC and the final day, Saturday, will see the three cyclists stop in Truro RFC before heading to the Falmouth Rugby Club Recreation Ground.

John added: "150 miles doesn't sound that challenging, but when you look at assent, it's equivalent to cycling from sea level to Everest Base Camp."

Celebrations will kick off when the returning cyclists are met at the club by Falmouth Town Mayor, Steve Eva.

The club will also unveil a new crest and playing kit, alongside some street art, and will finish with pasties and tea cakes while the youth team play a game of touch rugby.
