A MAN who racially harassed a 13 year old girl has appeared in front of magistrates for sentencing.

Joshua James Cooper, 30, of Hirst House in Tuckingmill, Camborne appeared at Truro Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, June 29 on one count of racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment or alarm or distress in the form of words or writing.

The incident occurred in Camborne on June 17 2021 with Cooper indicated a plea of guilty to intentionally using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour causing harassment, alarm or distress and that the offence was racially aggravated.

The court heard Cooper's plea when he appeared in front of magistrates on May 31, 2022.

Cooper had also appeared on a separate count of using threatening or abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment or alarm or distress for the same incident, however, this was withdrawn.

During his sentencing on June 29, Cooper was committed to prison for 26 weeks and made to pay compensation of £200.

The court described the offence as "truly vile offending" and explained the reasoning behind the sentence was due to 'serious' offence being racially aggravated and included aggressive behaviour in public place.

The court also noted how Cooper had failed to engage with non-custodial options.

It also noted that Cooper's guilty plea had been taken into account when imposing the sentence.
